"Language is a vital carrier and medium of human civilization. Intelligent language processing has been a long-cherished goal since the first computer. Its distinctive appeal is why so many people in industry, academia, and research devote themselves to it. Decades on, fully automatic and practical machine translation, sentiment analysis, question answering, dialogue, and personalized retrieval remain goals that researchers continue to pursue."
— Preface to Artificial Intelligence: Language Intelligence Processing, edited by Heyan Huang et al.
Intelligent language processing is a major direction in artificial intelligence, and a core topic that remains as important as ever.
As artificial intelligence, especially deep learning, keeps breaking new ground in software engineering, intelligent processing of programming languages has drawn wide attention from both communities. Like natural-language processing, it faces many challenges: how to build suitable language models for code, how to represent programming languages, and how to generate program code automatically.
Our group studies intelligent processing of both natural language and programming languages. Examples include sentiment analysis, question answering, and text classification for natural language, and code understanding, code generation, and code summarization for programming languages.
